Dear Prospective Students,
Have you been searching for a school with qualitative and quantitative education in media and communication studies? Seek no further. The Department of Mass Communication, University of Benin is the right place. Our learning philosophy is to provide you with hands on experience you need to succeed in the global arena. In keeping with this tradition, we provide you with opportunities to use your creative abilities and discover your potentials in the areas of broadcasting, journalism, advertising, cinematography, film making and Public relations. You can become a celebrated blogger, digital communication specialist, a mediapreneur with capacity to set up media projects that rake in good returns. Beyond this, you can become a change agent, a strategic communication icon.
We understand the changing nature of society, so our programmes are continuously reviewed in line with contemporary trends. Our monthly workshops are our links with the world. Our learning approach is student centred.
Our department boasts of a team of seasoned academics and studio assistants who can help mold your skills to a high-flying start. Our alumni community represents the evidence that training with us is a spring board to your professional fulfilment.
The department of Mass Communication, University of Benin started in the 2004/2005 academic session. Over the years it has grown to become one of the biggest departments in the Faculty of Arts and the University of Benin in general. We are at the verge of transforming to a faculty following current unbundling efforts.
Therefore, a concerted effort would be made to ensure that from training, the quality expected of our products (students), and their output would be commensurate to industry standard.

ABOUT US
The Mass Communication program is designed to provide high-quality education in Radio, Television, Film, Public Relations, Advertising, New Media, and Print production. Additionally, it will integrate knowledge from various societal sectors to thoroughly explore these areas. At the University of Benin, understanding the sociology of the media and its complex relationship with societal development will be central to the study of this discipline. The key to grasping this relationship lies in the media content offered by different outlets to society. Consequently, we will make a concerted effort to ensure that our students are trained to produce work that meets industry standards.

On graduation, the student should be able to
- Write news stories, advertising and Public relations copy, press releases, features, interpretative reports and investigative reports.
- Produce and present broadcast programmes
- Produce and criticize a film
- Run a blog, engage in digital marketing
- Handle graphical works of different types
- Produce a newspaper, magazine or newsletter

PostGraduate Diploma
The philosophy of the programme is therefore to equip non-graduates of Communication discipline and to enhance their job performance in the media; secondly, to qualify them to pursue an M/A OR M.SC degree in any of the areas in communication and media studies based on what they had already acquired and finally to better enable the graduates of communication and media studies with inadvertent deficiencies in their first degrees to improve on their academic performance.
Learning Outcome
Student admitted to the Programme should be able to do the following on graduation
- Undertake media writing effectively
- Appreciate the basic principles of advertising and public relations with emphasis on copy writing
- Conduct simple research
- Produce media works like documentary, news, film, ads
- Appreciate the varied areas of mass communication and the philosophy behind them
M.A MASS COMMUNICATION
The programme is intended to produce students sufficiently motivated in intellectual pursuit and moral growth. The courses ensure that every student have a reasonable mastery of the skills of Communication and Media Studies and thinking including problem solving as well as critical and creative thoughts, which will usefully be applied to serving creditably, the immediate and beyond. Secondly to provide adequate manpower in special areas within the field of Communication and media studies such as Reporters and Editors, broadcasters, public relations and advertising practitioners. Data analysts, development experts. Thirdly, to enhance professionalism among practitioners.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.)
The objective of the programme is to train the candidates to reach the apex of the discipline, and to attain competence in both the academic and professional dimensions of the field. Furthermore, the programme aims to imbue the candidates with the necessary requirements in extant theory and research in the discipline. Besides, students are guided to acquire specialization in one of the designated areas of concentration so that they can make contributions to the development of their community as teachers or researchers in the practice of mass communication.
